The About section framework: six seconds, two results, one ask
Your About gets six seconds. Open with your two strongest results, prove them with scale, close with what you want next — and kill 'passionate professional' forever.
Recruiters don't read your About. They scan it — roughly six seconds — for proof you can do the job. Most About sections fail in the first line: “I am a passionate professional with a proven track record…” That line has told the recruiter nothing, and it's the line most likely to be read.
", 'The framework
', 'Line 1–2: your two strongest results, stated plainly. “I run R200m+ infrastructure programmes to programme and budget. Last role: four concurrent sites, NEC4-administered, monthly EXCO reporting.” No adjectives — the numbers carry the claim.
', 'Middle: prove it. Two or three short paragraphs on how you do it: the sectors, the scale, the systems (NEC3/NEC4, IFRS, SAP, M-Pesa — whatever your market counts in). First person, plain verbs.
', "Last line: the ask. What you want next: “Looking for senior programme roles in Gauteng mining infrastructure.” Recruiters shortlist people who know what they're for.
", 'Kill list
', 'Passionate. Dynamic. Results-driven. Proven track record. Seasoned. Holistic. Synergy. Every one of these is a slot where a number could have gone. If a sentence would embarrass a competent 45-year-old engineer saying it about themselves, cut it.
