The LinkedIn headline formula for the SA job market

Role + sector + one distinguishing credential. The headline formula SA recruiters read in six seconds — and the five things yours should never be.

Your headline follows you everywhere on LinkedIn: search results, comments, connection requests, InMails. It is the single highest-traffic piece of text you own on the platform — and most professionals waste it on a job title.

The formula

Role + sector + one distinguishing credential. For a QS in construction: “Senior Quantity Surveyor · Commercial Construction · SACPCMP Registered · NEC4 Specialist”. A recruiter searching for a QS sees three signals before clicking: what you are, where you work, and why you're credible.

What a headline should never be

', "

1. A bare job title (“Project Manager at XYZ”) — says nothing a search result doesn't. 2. Five unrelated things (“PM | Coach | Speaker | Influencer | Founder”) — reads as unfocused. 3. Inspiration (“Turning vision into reality”) — a recruiter is hiring, not motivating. 4. Unemployment announced (“Seeking opportunities” as the opener) — lead with the role you want, not the gap. 5. Emoji clutter — one separator max.

The SA-specific bit

', "

Professional registration is a hard filter in the SA market: ECSA, SACPCMP, SAICA, SAIPA, SACQSP, HPCSA. If you hold one, it belongs in the headline — not buried under Skills. Recruiters scan for it in the first six seconds, and so does our audit's Credibility dimension. Same logic in Nigeria (COREN, ICAN), Ghana (GhIE, ICAG) and Kenya (EBK, ICPAK).
