Mining certificates of competency: Mine Overseer, Mine Manager and GCC exams
What the DMRE certificates of competency are (Mine Manager, Mine Overseer, Mine Engineer, Mine Surveyor, Blasting), who needs them and how to apply for the exams.
Statutory appointments on mines under the Mine Health and Safety Act 29 of 1996 need a certificate of competency issued after the Department's examinations. On a mining CV these certificates often matter more than a degree, so list each one with its scope.
The certificates
- Mine Manager's Certificate of Competency (metalliferous or coal)
- Mine Overseer's Certificate of Competency
- Mine Engineer's Certificate of Competency (the Government Certificate of Competency, mechanical or electrical)
- Mine Surveyor's Certificate of Competency
- Blasting certificates, engine driver, lampman and onsetter certificates
How to apply
- Check the eligibility and experience requirements on the application form for your certificate (for example DMRE 71 for the Mine Overseer's certificate).
- Book for a sitting in the year plan published by the Department.
- Pay into the Department's account and attach the original proof of payment. Postal orders are no longer accepted.
- Send queries to mhsi.examqueries@dmre.gov.za.
The Department does not publish examination fees on its exam page. They are set out on the application form for each certificate.
