ECSA registration: Candidate to Pr Eng, Pr Tech Eng or Pr Techni Eng, with 2026/27 fees

How engineers, technologists and technicians move from ECSA candidate registration to professional registration, and what it costs in 2026/27.

The Engineering Council of South Africa registers four professional categories: Professional Engineer (Pr Eng), Professional Engineering Technologist (Pr Tech Eng), Professional Engineering Technician (Pr Techni Eng) and Professional Certificated Engineer (Pr Cert Eng). Each has a candidate category, and there is a Candidate in a Specified Category for specialised functions. Which one you can reach depends on your qualification: a BEng or BSc(Eng) leads to Pr Eng, a BTech, Advanced Diploma or BEngTech to Pr Tech Eng, and a Diploma to Pr Techni Eng.

Candidate registration

Register as a Candidate soon after you qualify. ECSA charges less if you apply within one calendar year of qualifying, and professional registration costs half as much if your candidacy has been uninterrupted. Both are good reasons not to wait.

From Candidate to Professional

  1. Work under a mentor who is registered in your category, following the training and mentoring guide for your discipline. Plan on at least three years of post-qualification training for Pr Eng; it takes longer if your work does not cover all the outcomes.
  2. Keep a running record of your work against ECSA's competency outcomes. You will need it for the Training and Experience Report.
  3. Write the Training and Experience Report and the engineering report in ECSA's format. Show your own responsibility and judgement, not your team's output.
  4. Get your mentor's confirmation and referee reports from registered professionals who have seen your work.
  5. Submit through the ECSA portal and pay. A professional review interview usually follows, where reviewers test the competencies in your report.

How to show it

Use the designation exactly: "Candidate Engineer (ECSA)", "Pr Eng", "Pr Tech Eng". Recruiters filter on the exact string, and Pr Eng and Pr Tech Eng are different searches.
