CV keywords for engineers in South Africa: civil, structural, electrical and mechanical
What South African engineering recruiters search for: ECSA categories, design codes, software and the project details that move an engineer's CV up the list.
Engineering CVs fail search for a predictable reason: engineers describe the problem they solved, and recruiters search for the tool and the code they solved it with. Both belong on the page, and the second is what gets you found.
Your ECSA category, written exactly
Pr Eng, Pr Tech Eng, Pr Techni Eng and Pr Cert Eng are four different searches. So is "Candidate Engineer". Put the one you hold in the headline, and if you are a candidate, say how far into your training you are. The ECSA registration guide has the route and the 2026/27 fees.
Design codes and standards
South African adverts name SANS codes by number. A structural engineer who writes "steel design" misses the search for SANS 10162; an electrical engineer who writes "wiring regulations" misses SANS 10142-1.
Software
The high-demand words in 2026
Energy work has changed the electrical market. Solar PV, battery storage, embedded generation and wheeling appear in a growing share of electrical adverts, and the recruiter usually wants the size of the plant: kWp or MW. Water and sanitation infrastructure is the equivalent for civil engineers, often tied to municipal grant funding (MIG, WSIG). If you have this experience, put the term and the size in your headline.
Show responsibility, not attendance
Say what you signed, designed or were accountable for. "Designed the 11kV reticulation for a 400-unit development and signed the CoCs" is a different level from "assisted with electrical design". Recruiters and ECSA reviewers read for the same thing.
