CV keywords for construction and built-environment jobs in South Africa
The keywords South African contractors, consultants and public clients search for in construction CVs: contract forms, registrations, software and the numbers that prove scale.
Construction recruiters in South Africa search in a narrow vocabulary. A contractor looking for a site agent types the contract form, the work type and sometimes the CIDB grade of the projects. A municipality hiring a project manager types IDMS and MFMA. If your CV calls the same experience "managing building contracts", neither search finds you.
Contract forms are the first filter
Name every contract form you have worked under, exactly as an advert would write it. "NEC4 ECC Option C" and "JBCC PBA" are what people type. "NEC" on its own loses you the searches for NEC3 and NEC4 roles, and "contracts" loses you all of them.
Legislation and procurement terms
Public-sector work, which is a large share of the market, adds its own layer. Adverts from SOEs, departments and municipalities list the frameworks the role works under, and the screening is literal.
Registration is a keyword
Registration status is searched as a phrase: "Pr CPM", "Candidate Quantity Surveyor", "CHSO". Put the category and status in your headline. The guides on SACPCMP, SACQSP, SACAP and construction health and safety registration explain the route and current fees.
Software
Estimating and QS roles filter on the package. Planning roles filter on the scheduler. List the ones you use daily, not the ones you opened once.
Numbers carry the most weight
The keyword gets you found. The number gets you shortlisted. Give the contract value, the duration and the outcome for your biggest two projects, in the first line of each role: "R180m civil works, delivered in 22 months, final account settled 3% below budget." A recruiter reading forty CVs looks for scale before anything else.
Role-by-role keyword lists
Mistakes that cost interviews
- Listing "construction" as a skill. Every applicant has it.
- Dropping the registration category to save space in the headline.
- Using your old employer's internal project codes instead of what the project was.
- Writing duties ("responsible for site meetings") where an outcome would fit ("cut the programme by six weeks by resequencing the services").
