SACAP registration: from Candidate to Professional Architect or Technologist

How SACAP registration works for architects, senior architectural technologists, technologists and draughtspersons: qualifications, two years under a mentor, and the Professional Practice Exam.

The South African Council for the Architectural Profession registers four professional categories, each with a candidate category: Professional Architect (PrArch), Professional Senior Architectural Technologist (PrSArchT), Professional Architectural Technologist (PrArchT) and Professional Architectural Draughtsperson. Council submissions in most municipalities need a registered person's name and number, so this registration has practical weight as well as CV value.

Which category your qualification leads to

The steps

  1. Register as a candidate in your category as soon as you qualify.
  2. Work for at least two years under a registered mentor. Keep a record of the work stages you are involved in.
  3. Pass the Professional Practice Examination (PPE). It is required for professional registration in the architect and technologist categories.
  4. Apply for professional registration and pay the annual fee each year.

Costs

SACAP publishes its application and annual fees through the fee calculator on sacapsa.com rather than as a public schedule, so check the current amount there for your category before you apply. Registration lapses if annual fees are not paid, and a lapsed registration cannot be used on council submissions.

How to show it

Use the exact category: "PrSArchT" and "PrArchT" are separate searches, and Senior is a level recruiters filter for.
