SACQSP registration: Candidate Quantity Surveyor to PrQS

The route from Candidate Quantity Surveyor to Professional Quantity Surveyor (PrQS): 33 months of training, the Professional Skills Modules, the competence interview, and ASAQS membership costs.

The South African Council for the Quantity Surveying Profession registers Candidate Quantity Surveyors and Professional Quantity Surveyors, who use the designation PrQS. The Association of South African Quantity Surveyors (ASAQS) is a separate, voluntary association. Employers and public clients look for the SACQSP category first.

The route

1. Complete an accredited quantity surveying degree and register as a Candidate Quantity Surveyor.
2. Complete at least 33 months of supervised, in-service training after qualifying.
3. Complete all the SACQSP Professional Skills Modules (PSM). Since 1 January 2013 you must produce the PSM certificates before you are admitted to the professional competence interview.
4. Apply for Professional registration and attend the competence interview.
5. Once registered, use PrQS after your name and keep up your annual fee and CPD.

Costs

The SACQSP does not publish its current registration and annual fees on its website. Ask the Council for the fee schedule before you apply; the last schedule on the site is from 2018/19. ASAQS membership, which many QSs hold alongside registration, is published:

ASAQS 2026/27 schedule, VAT inclusive. Checked 02/10/2026.

How to show it

"Candidate Quantity Surveyor (SACQSP)" or "PrQS" in the headline. If you are a Candidate with most of your PSMs done, say so in your About section: it tells an employer how close you are.
