SANC registration for nurses: categories and 2026 annual fees

The SANC categories under the Nursing Act 2005, how newly qualified nurses register, and the 2026 annual fees.

You cannot practise nursing in South Africa without current registration with the South African Nursing Council. Under the Nursing Act 33 of 2005 the categories are Professional Nurse, Midwife, Staff Nurse and Auxiliary Nurse, with Nurse Specialist and Midwife Specialist for post-basic qualifications. The older registered and enrolled nurse registers were combined into one register.

Newly qualified

  1. Complete your SANC-accredited nursing programme. Your nursing education institution confirms completion to the Council.
  2. Complete community service where it applies to your qualification.
  3. Register in your category and pay the annual fee before the deadline each year. You may not practise without a current annual practising certificate.
